Okay, you got your yarn, some crochet hooks, and are ready to jump off the deep end into the world of crochet! Great, where do you start? Most people would probably tell you to start with the foundation chain and single crochet dish clothe. While, that is a good spot I have a better one.
Drum Roll Please………………The Solid Granny Square!!

Okay, not all that exciting but let me explain. The solid granny square is a versatile pattern that will have you hooking up all kinds of projects. Dish clothes, blankets, shrugs, and even possible a purse or two or three…..Okay, maybe just me with all the purses but still you get my point.

Let’s go over why it is such a great pattern (I mean besides the aforementioned). I will be going into some detail about the pattern but it is readily available for free with lots of YouTube Videos, etc. So, I wont be giving any secrets away here.
The solid granny square utilizes the chain stitch, slip stitch and double crochet in U.S. terms (treble crochet in U.K.) That is it! It is a great way to really get familiar with the structure of your stitches. And you will feel like you are rocking out the projects! What a great way to motivate yourself to keep going!!! Depending on the size yarn and hook you choose you can get a couple dish clothes done in a few hours (now this is for beginners, you more advanced crocheters could knock out a blanket). That is right the more you practice, the faster you will get and before you know it you will be making a blanket in just a sitting or two. That is because of how a granny square grows. Instead of working back and forth in rows, you will be working in the round.
Now don’t let working in the round scare you, it is not hard. For some it maybe easier than getting your rows straight when you are first learning. And because you are working in the round you project grows on all four sides, which is why it grows so fast.

Trust me this is beginner friendly and a confidence booster. Once you get this pattern down the world of crochet will start to open up even more to you.
Until next time, Happy crocheting!
